Iñaki Susaeta: Managing Waste and the Challenge of the Circular Economy

‘Waste: we do not want to see it, but it is here’ Iñaki Susaeta, an environmental technician at IHOBE, the Basque Government’s environmental management agency, thus started his talk at the Donostia Sustainability Forum. In a world flooded with statistics, Susaeta proposed a change of strategy: ‘for the narrative to try to kill the data’. The aim is to avoid cold figures to address the root of the problem: our relationship with objects and hidden cost of our development.

Esther Badiola: "The climate agenda has no political persuasion"

A goal without a plan is just a wish; such an ambitious goal as the green transition defined by the European Green Deal needs financing that is up to the task. During a seminar of the Donostia Sustainability Forum, the economist Esther Badiola, senior adviser of the Climate Change Office in the EIB Operations Department, went over the key role that the institution is playing in the transition towards a sustainable economy.

Hydrogen as a commitment to the future while we recycle plastic

Crisis must be used as an opportunity for change

We are living through complex times of great uncertainty so it is good to share our doubts and uncertainties. On this journey towards ZERO emissions and sustainability it is very important to know where we are now and where we are heading. These are points that do not need to generate too much controversy, but the problem starts when we start asking ourselves questions such as when and how to undertake this journey.

We have the energy development of the 1990s, whatever we do now is what will be operational in 2050

In the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the EU set out a strategy for the use of hydrogen in a climate-clean and emission-free Europe by 2050, making it one of the key vectors. The goals set were 6 GW installed by 2024, 40 by 2030 and by 2050 to move from 2% to 14-15% of the EU's energy use. A minimum investment of 180,000 million euros is considered, which could reach up to 470,000 million Euros.

“The bad thing about the circular economy is that it is sometimes used as a slogan to avoid making the changes needed”

“The circular economy has become a slogan. Sometimes one gets the impression that by speaking about the circular economy other things are left aside. Companies are told to improve their efficiency and to recycle, but these ideas are nothing new. What is really needed is a rethink of the entire economic system. Back in the 1980s people spoke about natural capitalism or factor four. That is all very well, but not much has been done since then”.

Sustainable fashion and Climate Change

Since its beginnings in 1988, ASTORE has been able to combine, in its way of being and acting, the fundamentals of the rooted industrial tradition of the Basque Country with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the market, remaining faithful to the values that have formed part of the spirit of the brand throughout all these years: quality and functionality, on the one hand, careful design and technicality on the other.

SMEs, the missing link in sustainable business transformation?

Just as important as the risk of greenwashing is the risk of timewashing, i.e. the risk of inaction due to lack of data or incomplete regulation. The key is to start acting and be willing to make an impact on the environment in which you operate.
