The second edition of the Cross-border Summer Courses gets underway

It will be held from the 17th to the 26th of July 2023 in Bayonne.

  • The Cross-border Summer Courses were born in 2022 thanks to the collaboration of the public universities of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarre Euroregion with the support of the cross-border local authorities.
  • In view of the success of the first edition, this year's programme will be diverse and will include 12 proposals.
  • Registration is free and the main venue will be the Cité des Arts, and the crossing on the UPV/EHU training ship Saltillo, which at each stop will offer an activity open to the public in Santurce, Bilbao, Motrico, Donostia/San Sebastián and San Juan de Luz.

The second edition of the Cross-border Summer Courses was presented today in Bayonne. The event was attended by all the members of the organising committee and, as representatives, Jean-René Etchegaray, president of the Communauté d'Agglomération Pays Basque, Eider Mendoza, general deputy of Gipuzkoa, Mathieu Bergé, managing director of the NAEN Euroregion, Eva Ferreira, rector of the UPV/EHU and Itziar Alkorta, academic director of the UPV/EHU Summer Courses, explained all the details of the project.

The Cross-border Summer Courses are the fruit of the collaboration of the Université de Bordeaux (UB), the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the UPV/EHU Summer Courses Foundation, the Université Bordeaux Montaigne (UBM), the Université de Pau et des Pays de L´Adour (UPPA), the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), the Euskampus Foundation and the CNRS/IKER, with the support of local cross-border authorities - the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque, and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarre Euroregion. This year, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bordeaux (MSH Bx) joined the project.

The first edition demonstrated its effectiveness as a strategic point and node for the dissemination of intercultural and multilingual knowledge, as well as its capacity to cross borders to share knowledge and generate meeting networks that translate into new opportunities and proposals in the short, medium and long term. The Cross-border Summer Courses are aimed at cross-border citizens, students and the academic world and seek to make visible the proactive role of universities in the creation of a more economically, socially and territorially cohesive cross-border space, as has been achieved in other European cross-border areas.

The mission of this programme is to disseminate the knowledge generated in the participating universities and scientific institutions, as well as the dissemination of the strategic plans of public institutions in order to promote the development of a knowledge-based Euroregional economy, which places innovation and new technologies as catalytic tools for the generation of added value.

The courses will be taught in the three official languages of the Euroregion (Basque, French and Spanish) as well as English, underlining the value of multilingualism and interculturalism. The courses will be held in person and it will be possible to follow part of the programme live online. They will include cultural and open activities linked to the territory.

This edition will take place between the 17th and 26th of July 2023 and will include 12 courses:
